IT WAS UPLIFTING, FUN AND WE DEFINITELY HAD ONE OF OUR BEST AUDIENCES YET!
When Springhill Catholic Primary School, with its 684 pupils, invited RMVC to sing as part of the School’s celebrations of St David’s Day we weren’t quite sure what to expect, but we absolutely loved what we got during an uplifting afternoon of song. 25 of us, red-shirted, with Richard Stannard taking the conductors chair and Brian Budden on the piano, warmed up in the modern hall with no chairs waiting for our ‘little’ audience. In reality, the first children who filed into the hall to sit expectant and cross-legged were indeed to our eyes very young and very little, but in numbers they most certainly were not.
We’d been told in advance we would be singing to separate groups of children from the foundation year through to year 6, in mini-concerts, and our aim was to feature specially chosen music for each group. We included fun songs with animation (and some dressing up), songs from the shows, and a Welsh piece, O Gymru, which we sang in Welsh in honour of St David’s Day. The latter wonderfully with the children’s participation, again in Welsh.
RMVC’s Concert Secretary and compère Mike Bull said “I’m not sure who enjoyed the afternoon more the children or the choristers. For all of us it was a delightful and entertaining afternoon. The children could not have been better behaved, more attentive and more appreciative. From the start they clapped enthusiastically, gave us great smiles, moved to the rhythms of the music, and touched the hearts of all our singers. What a wonderful tribute they are to Springhill School its teachers and its values. It’s not something the choir has done before but who knows we might do it again! So thank you Springhill for inviting us.
